About this remedy

Castor oil sits on the FDA's Over-the-Counter monograph as a safe and effective stimulant laxative. Its active compound, ricinoleic acid, binds to receptors in the intestinal wall and triggers smooth muscle contraction, typically producing a bowel movement within 2–6 hours. It is one of the oldest and most reliably effective natural laxatives — used by Egyptian physicians 4,000 years ago — and remains the standard for stubborn occasional constipation. It is powerful and fast-acting, and intended only for single-use relief, never as a daily habit.

Preparation

Take 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 ml) of cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil on an empty stomach. Mix with a small amount of orange juice or a fruit smoothie to mask the thick texture.

Dosage

1–2 tbsp, single use only. Effects typically in 2–6 hours. Do not use again the same day.

Cautions

NEVER use orally during pregnancy — induces uterine contractions. Not for long-term use (can cause dependence and electrolyte imbalance). Avoid in IBD, intestinal obstruction, or appendicitis. Stop if cramping is severe. Children only under medical supervision.
