About this remedy
Clove oil contains up to 90% eugenol, a natural compound so effective at numbing tooth pain that it has been used in dentistry for over a century. A 2006 study in the Journal of Dentistry found clove oil comparable to benzocaine (the same active ingredient in Orajel) for gum-numbing efficacy. Eugenol works by inhibiting nerve signal transmission and also has antibacterial action against oral pathogens — a combined pain-relief and infection-fighting effect. Ideal for use while waiting for a dentist appointment.
Preparation
Dilute 1–2 drops of pure clove essential oil in ½ tsp (2–3 ml) of a carrier oil like olive or coconut oil. Soak a small piece of cotton or cotton bud in the mixture. Apply directly to the aching tooth and surrounding gum, holding it in place for a few minutes.
Dosage
Apply as needed for acute pain, up to 4 times daily. Do not use for more than 3–5 days without seeing a dentist — the underlying cause needs professional treatment.
Cautions
Never use undiluted clove essential oil — it can burn oral tissue. Do not swallow. Not recommended for children under 2. Avoid in pregnancy. Not a substitute for dental care — see a dentist for persistent tooth pain.
