About this remedy

Oil pulling (kavala) is a 3,000-year-old Ayurvedic practice of swishing oil in the mouth to draw out bacteria and support oral hygiene. Coconut oil is the modern favourite because its lauric acid has demonstrated antimicrobial action against Streptococcus mutans, the primary cause of tooth decay. A 2016 trial in the Journal of the Indian Society of Pedodontics found 10 minutes of daily coconut oil pulling significantly reduced plaque and gingivitis over 30 days. Best done on an empty stomach in the morning, before brushing.

Preparation

Take 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil. If solid, let it soften in your mouth for a few seconds. Swish gently through and around your teeth for 10–20 minutes. The oil will become thin and white as it emulsifies with saliva.

Dosage

1 session daily in the morning on an empty stomach, before eating or brushing. Spit into the trash (not the sink — hardened oil clogs pipes). Rinse well with water and brush as normal.

Cautions

Do NOT swallow — the oil is now full of bacteria drawn from your mouth. If your jaw gets tired, swish gently rather than vigorously. Not a replacement for brushing and flossing.
