About this remedy
Garlic supplementation is one of the most evidence-based herbal interventions for hypertension. A meta-analysis of 20 trials found aged garlic extract reduces systolic blood pressure by an average of 8.6 mmHg and diastolic by 6.1 mmHg in hypertensive patients. Allicin triggers hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide production, relaxing blood vessel walls.
Preparation
Crush 2–3 fresh garlic cloves and let sit 10 minutes to activate allicin. Consume raw mixed with food, or take aged garlic extract capsules (Kyolic brand is most studied).
Dosage
2–3 raw cloves daily, or 600–1200 mg aged garlic extract in divided doses
Cautions
May interact with blood thinners, ACE inhibitors, and some HIV medications. Discontinue 7–10 days before surgery. Monitor blood pressure regularly.
