About this remedy
Miswak is a natural toothbrush cut from twigs of the Salvadora persica tree, used across Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia for over 7,000 years. It contains silica (mild abrasive for whitening), fluoride, and antimicrobial compounds — and the WHO has formally recommended it as an effective oral hygiene tool. A 2015 systematic review in the Saudi Medical Journal found miswak comparable to a toothbrush for plaque and gingivitis reduction. Requires no water, paste, or brush — ideal for travel, camping, or a portable oral hygiene ritual.
Preparation
Peel back about 1 cm of bark at the tip of a fresh miswak stick. Chew until the fibres soften and form a natural brush. Rub gently along teeth and gum line for 2–3 minutes, angling the bristles slightly toward the gums.
Dosage
1–5 times daily (traditionally used before each of the five daily prayers in Islamic practice). Trim the frayed tip and re-peel when bristles wear down.
Cautions
Store dry between uses to prevent mould. Replace when the stick becomes brittle. Not a full replacement for regular dental checkups.
