About this remedy
Saffron is one of the most clinically validated herbs for mood. A 2019 meta-analysis of 23 randomised controlled trials found that saffron extract was significantly more effective than placebo and comparable to standard antidepressants for mild-to-moderate depression — with fewer side effects. Its compounds crocin and safranal are thought to increase serotonin availability in the brain. This golden tea is a gentle, evidence-based daily mood support.
Preparation
Steep a small pinch of saffron threads (about 7-10 threads, roughly 15-30 mg) in 8 oz hot water or warm milk for 10 minutes — the liquid turns a beautiful golden color. Add honey to taste.
Dosage
1-2 cups daily. The clinically studied dose for mood is around 30 mg of saffron per day. Allow 4-6 weeks of consistent use to judge the mood-lifting effect.
Cautions
Do not exceed 1.5 g of saffron per day — high doses are toxic. May interact with antidepressants, blood thinners, and blood pressure medications. Avoid during pregnancy (high doses can stimulate uterine contractions). Not a substitute for treatment of moderate-to-severe depression.
