Berberine
Berberis / Coptis chinensis
Bright yellow alkaloid with meta-analysis evidence comparable to metformin for blood sugar
About Berberine
Berberine is a bright yellow alkaloid extracted from several plants including barberry, Oregon grape, goldenseal, and coptis. Used for over 3,000 years in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, it has become one of the most-studied natural compounds for metabolic health. A 2008 meta-analysis in Metabolism found 500 mg berberine 2–3 times daily was comparable to metformin for lowering fasting glucose and HbA1c in type 2 diabetes. Its mechanism is via activation of AMPK — the same enzyme metformin targets — which is the body's master metabolic switch.
Key benefits
- Meta-analysis evidence comparable to metformin for glucose control
- Activates AMPK, the body's master metabolic regulator
- May support healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- Antimicrobial in the gut, may support microbial balance
How to use
Take 500 mg standardized extract 2–3 times daily with meals. Best used in cycles: 8–12 weeks on, 2–4 weeks off. Look for products standardized to ≥97% berberine HCl.
Did you know?
The bright yellow colour of berberine was once used as a fabric dye in ancient Persia. It's the same compound that gives turmeric-berberine paste its potency — these two herbs are often paired in Ayurveda for synergistic effects on inflammation and blood sugar.
