Meta-analysis evidence comparable to metformin

About this remedy
Berberine is one of the most rigorously studied natural compounds for blood sugar. A 2008 meta-analysis in Metabolism found 500 mg berberine 2–3 times daily was comparable to metformin for lowering fasting glucose, HbA1c, and post-meal glucose in type 2 diabetes over 3 months. Its mechanism is activation of AMPK — the same enzyme metformin targets — which improves insulin sensitivity, reduces liver glucose production, and enhances glucose uptake in muscle. Best taken with meals so it acts on carbohydrate absorption directly.
Preparation
Take a 500 mg berberine HCl capsule with the first bite of each of your three largest meals of the day. Choose products standardized to ≥97% berberine HCl for consistent dosing.
Dosage
500 mg, 2–3 times daily with meals. Best used in 8–12 week cycles with 2–4 week breaks.
Cautions
May cause temporary GI upset — start with 500 mg once daily and build up. Interacts with many medications (including metformin, blood thinners, and immunosuppressants) via CYP3A4 inhibition — consult a clinician before use. Do not use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
