Seaweed (Kelp)

Laminaria / Ascophyllum

Mineral-rich sea vegetable and one of nature's best sources of iodine

About Seaweed (Kelp)

Seaweed — including kelp, kombu, wakame, and bladderwrack — is among the most mineral-dense foods on the planet. It is the single richest natural source of iodine, an essential mineral for healthy thyroid function and metabolism. Coastal cultures in Japan, Korea, and the British Isles have eaten it for millennia, and Japan's traditionally high seaweed intake is often cited as a factor in its population's longevity. Seaweed also provides fucoxanthin (studied for fat metabolism), alginate fibre (supports satiety), and a broad spectrum of trace minerals.

Key benefits

  • Richest natural source of iodine for thyroid and metabolic health
  • Contains fucoxanthin, studied for supporting fat metabolism
  • Alginate fibre promotes fullness and supports digestion
  • Dense in trace minerals — calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium

How to use

Add dried kombu or wakame to soups, broths, and stews (a strip of kombu in stock adds minerals and umami). Sprinkle kelp flakes on food as a salt alternative. Take kelp tablets only as directed. Start with small amounts due to high iodine content.

Did you know?

A single sheet of nori or a small piece of kelp can contain more than the entire recommended daily intake of iodine — sometimes many times over. This is why seaweed should be eaten in moderation: too much iodine can disrupt the thyroid just as too little can.
