Spirulina

Arthrospira platensis

Nutrient-dense blue-green algae rich in protein and antioxidants

About Spirulina

Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on Earth. Composed of up to 70% complete protein by weight, it contains all essential amino acids, along with B vitamins, iron, and the powerful antioxidant phycocyanin (which gives it its blue-green color). NASA has studied it as a food source for astronauts. It has demonstrated immune-supporting, antioxidant, and cholesterol-lowering effects in clinical trials.

Key benefits

  • Exceptionally rich in complete protein and bioavailable iron
  • Contains phycocyanin, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound
  • May support healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels
  • Supports immune function and provides sustained energy

How to use

Start with 1 tsp (about 3 g) of spirulina powder daily, building up to 1-2 tbsp. Blend into smoothies or juices to mask the strong taste. Also available in tablet form (take 3-6 g daily). Choose a reputable, contaminant-tested source.

Did you know?

The Aztecs harvested spirulina from Lake Texcoco and dried it into cakes called 'tecuitlatl' over 500 years ago. Today, a single gram of spirulina contains more antioxidants than five servings of vegetables, making it one of the most concentrated superfoods available.
