About this remedy

Andrographis is one of the better-studied herbs for the common cold. Systematic reviews of randomised trials in adults with uncomplicated colds and upper-respiratory infections found that standardised andrographis extracts eased symptoms such as sore throat, cough and tiredness sooner than placebo. The benefit appears greatest when it is started within the first day or two of symptoms and taken as a short course, which is how this protocol uses it.

Preparation

At the first sign of a cold, start a standardised andrographis extract โ€” capsules or tablets that state their andrographolide content. Take each dose with food and a full glass of water, alongside rest, plenty of fluids and warm drinks.

Dosage

Follow the product label, usually split into 2โ€“3 doses a day. Take it for no more than 5 days in a row; if you are not improving by then, stop and speak to a healthcare professional.

Cautions

Do not use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding or when trying to conceive, and do not give to children. It can cause stomach upset, headache and, rarely, allergic reactions such as a rash โ€” stop if these happen. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners, blood-pressure or diabetes medicine, or immunosuppressants. See a doctor for a high fever, difficulty breathing, or symptoms that last more than a week.
