About this remedy

Arnica gel and salve have been used topically since the 16th century for bruises, sprains, and muscle soreness. A 2007 double-blind trial in Rheumatology International found arnica gel comparable to ibuprofen gel for reducing pain and stiffness from osteoarthritis, and athletes have long used it after hard training to speed local recovery. Its sesquiterpene lactones (especially helenalin) reduce inflammatory signalling right at the site of application. Strictly topical โ€” arnica is toxic if swallowed except in highly diluted homeopathic pellets.

Preparation

Apply a small amount of arnica gel, cream, or salve to sore, bruised, or stiff muscles or joints. Massage gently until absorbed. Reapply 2โ€“4 times daily.

Dosage

Apply after training and again before bed on days with heavy soreness. Do not use for more than 2โ€“3 weeks continuously in the same area.

Cautions

NEVER take arnica orally in herbal form โ€” it is toxic. Do not apply to open wounds, broken skin, or mucous membranes. Discontinue if skin irritation develops (rare but possible). Avoid in pregnancy. Homeopathic arnica pellets are a separate, highly diluted preparation with different safety considerations.
