About this remedy
Castor oil packs are a traditional remedy popularised in the 20th century by herbalist Edgar Cayce, who recommended them for inflammation, joint pain, and abdominal discomfort. A folded cotton flannel is saturated in warm castor oil, placed over the affected joint, and covered with a heating pad. The warmth itself increases local circulation, while ricinoleic acid is thought to be absorbed transdermally to soothe underlying tissue. A 2009 study in Phytotherapy Research found topical castor oil reduced pain scores in knee osteoarthritis.
Preparation
Saturate (but don't drip) a piece of organic cotton or wool flannel with 3โ4 tablespoons of cold-pressed castor oil. Place over the affected joint, cover with plastic wrap, then a heating pad set to low or medium. Rest for 45โ60 minutes. Store the oily cloth in a sealed glass jar in the fridge โ it can be reused 5โ10 times.
Dosage
3โ4 sessions per week, 45โ60 minutes each, for ongoing joint support
Cautions
Topical use only. Do not use on broken skin or during pregnancy. If a heating pad worsens the pain, discontinue. Wash flannel separately from other laundry โ castor oil stains.
