About this remedy

Virgin coconut oil is a highly effective natural skin moisturizer with antimicrobial properties. Its lauric acid (which makes up ~50% of its fatty acids) has demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus โ€” a common skin infection pathogen. A randomized controlled trial found coconut oil significantly improved skin hydration and was as effective as mineral oil for treating xerosis (dry skin). It also provides vitamin E for antioxidant skin protection.

Preparation

Apply a thin layer of virgin coconut oil to damp skin after bathing. For deep conditioning, apply a thicker layer to very dry areas (elbows, knees, heels) before bed. For hair, warm 1โ€“2 tablespoons and apply as a pre-shampoo mask for 30 minutes.

Dosage

Apply topically 1โ€“2 times daily to dry or irritated skin areas

Cautions

May clog pores on acne-prone facial skin โ€” patch test first. Not recommended as a face moisturizer for oily or acne-prone skin. Coconut allergy is rare but possible. For external use primarily.
