About this remedy

Oregano oil is one of the most potent natural antimicrobials in the herbal cabinet. Its active compounds carvacrol and thymol disrupt the membranes of bacteria, fungi, and some viruses, and laboratory studies show activity against E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Candida. A 2012 review in Frontiers in Microbiology highlighted its potential as a complementary antimicrobial agent. Best used in short courses (5โ€“10 days) at the first signs of seasonal illness or for targeted gut microbial balance โ€” not daily, because it is non-selective and can also disturb beneficial gut flora.

Preparation

Take an enteric-coated oregano oil capsule (standardized to 60โ€“80% carvacrol) with food, or dilute 2โ€“3 drops of high-quality oregano essential oil in a teaspoon of olive oil and swallow. Never take the essential oil neat โ€” it can burn mucous membranes.

Dosage

150โ€“200 mg capsule, 2โ€“3 times daily with food, for 5โ€“10 days only

Cautions

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. May interact with blood-thinning medications and diabetes drugs. Can disturb beneficial gut bacteria โ€” consider following with a probiotic. Do not use for more than 10 days without a break.
