About this remedy

St. John's Wort is one of the most extensively studied herbal antidepressants. A Cochrane review of 29 trials involving over 5,400 patients concluded it is more effective than placebo and comparable to standard SSRIs for mild-to-moderate depression, with fewer side effects. Hyperforin, its primary active compound, modulates serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline reuptake โ€” the same pathways targeted by pharmaceutical antidepressants.

Preparation

Take a standardized extract (0.3% hypericin) โ€” typically 300 mg capsules, 3 times daily with meals. Or 2-4 ml of a 1:5 tincture, 3 times daily.

Dosage

Allow 4-6 weeks to judge full mood-lifting effect. Do not stop abruptly โ€” taper over 1-2 weeks.

Cautions

Interacts with MANY medications including SSRIs, birth control pills, blood thinners, and HIV medications โ€” check with a pharmacist or doctor before starting. May cause photosensitivity; use sun protection. Not for severe or suicidal depression.
