About this remedy

Tea tree oil contains terpinen-4-ol, a potent antimicrobial. A comparative study found 5% tea tree oil gel was as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide for acne, with fewer side effects (less dryness and irritation). It kills Propionibacterium acnes bacteria and reduces inflammation.

Preparation

Dilute tea tree oil to 5% concentration: mix 5 drops tea tree oil with 95 drops carrier oil (jojoba or coconut). Apply with a cotton swab to individual blemishes.

Dosage

Apply 1–2 times daily to affected spots. Full results typically seen after 6–12 weeks.

Cautions

Never apply undiluted tea tree oil to skin. Avoid contact with eyes. Not for internal use. May cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
