Oat Straw

Avena sativa

Silica-rich nerve tonic traditionally used for cigarette cravings and recovery

About Oat Straw

Oat straw is harvested from the green stems and leaves of the oat plant, distinct from the milky seed tops. It is one of the most deeply nourishing long-term tonics for the nervous system, rich in calcium, magnesium, and silica. Uniquely, oat straw has been studied specifically for reducing cigarette cravings — small clinical trials from the 1970s onward have shown tinctures of green oat extract can cut daily cigarette consumption in habitual smokers. It is safer and gentler than milky oats for daily long-term use.

Key benefits

  • Studied specifically for reducing cigarette cravings
  • Deeply restores an exhausted or anxious nervous system
  • Rich in silica, calcium, and magnesium for bone and hair health
  • Eases withdrawal-related insomnia and irritability

How to use

Steep 1-2 tbsp dried oat straw in hot water for 15-20 minutes (longer is better — overnight infusions extract maximum minerals). Drink 1-3 cups daily. Best used consistently over 4-8 weeks. Combines beautifully with nettle for a highly mineralising daily tonic.

Did you know?

A 1971 clinical study at Thomas Hospital in Madras, India, found that a tincture of green oat extract reduced daily cigarette consumption in heavy smokers by roughly 50% after just 30 days — the study helped trigger a wave of interest in oat straw as an addiction recovery herb.
