Skullcap

Scutellaria lateriflora

Gentle nervine for anxiety, tension, and calm focus

About Skullcap

American skullcap is one of the most respected nervines in Western herbalism, used for over two centuries to calm an overactive nervous system without causing sedation. It contains flavonoids like baicalin and scutellarin that interact with GABA receptors in a way similar to — but much milder than — pharmaceutical anxiolytics. Unlike valerian, it is uplifting and clarifying rather than sleep-inducing, making it ideal for daytime use.

Key benefits

  • Calms the nervous system without causing drowsiness
  • Traditionally used for anxiety, panic, and tension headaches
  • May help ease nicotine and caffeine withdrawal symptoms
  • Supports focus during periods of stress or burnout

How to use

Steep 1-2 tsp dried skullcap aerial parts in hot water for 10-15 minutes. Drink 1-3 cups daily. Fresh plant tinctures are considered most potent. Best used consistently for 2-3 weeks to notice cumulative effects on the nervous system.

Did you know?

Skullcap gets its name from the tiny helmet-shaped bumps on the outside of its flower calyces, which resemble miniature medieval skullcaps. In the 1700s, it was controversially promoted as a cure for rabies — a claim that gave the plant its other name, 'mad-dog weed'.
