About this remedy
Hard training raises cortisol — necessary in the short term, but chronically elevated cortisol impairs recovery, sleep, and muscle rebuilding. Ashwagandha is one of the best-studied natural cortisol regulators. A 2012 trial in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine found 300 mg twice daily reduced cortisol by 27% in chronically stressed subjects, and studies in resistance-trained athletes have shown improved strength, muscle mass, and recovery. Best taken in the evening — it also improves sleep depth without causing next-day grogginess.
Preparation
Warm 1 cup of milk (any kind). Whisk in 1 tsp ashwagandha powder, ½ tsp cinnamon, and a small pinch of nutmeg. Sweeten with a little honey. Drink 30–60 minutes before bed on training days.
Dosage
1 cup evening on hard training days, or 300–600 mg standardized extract (KSM-66 or Sensoril) twice daily for consistent adaptogenic benefit
Cautions
May interact with thyroid medication (can raise T4). Avoid in hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, and if on immunosuppressants. Can enhance sedatives — do not combine with sleep medications. Nightshade family — rare individuals are sensitive.
