About this remedy
A 1994 randomized controlled trial by Rose and Behm found that inhaling the vapour of black pepper essential oil significantly reduced cigarette cravings and anxiety during short-term nicotine abstinence. The vapour mimics the throat sensation of cigarette smoke without any nicotine, helping satisfy the sensory component of smoking — often the hardest part of quitting to address with gum or patches.
Preparation
Add 2-3 drops of black pepper essential oil to a small bowl of steaming water. Lean over, cover your head with a towel, and inhale deeply through the mouth for 2-3 minutes. Alternatively, place 2 drops on a tissue or inhaler stick and breathe deeply when cravings strike.
Dosage
Use at the onset of any craving, as often as needed. Most cravings last only 3-5 minutes — breathe through them.
Cautions
Do not apply black pepper essential oil directly to skin or ingest. Keep away from eyes. Avoid in asthma triggered by strong aromatics. Patch test inhalation tolerance first.
