About this remedy

Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes alpha brain wave activity — the state associated with calm alertness. It also provides B vitamins (which support nervous system function) and vitamin C. Studies show L-theanine significantly reduces anxiety and stress reactivity within 30–40 minutes without causing drowsiness. The combination with small amounts of caffeine provides calm focus rather than jitteriness.

Preparation

Steep high-quality green tea in water at 175°F (80°C) for 2–3 minutes. Avoid boiling water, which makes the tea bitter. Gyokuro and matcha have the highest L-theanine content.

Dosage

2–3 cups daily. For supplementation, 200–400 mg L-theanine.

Cautions

Contains caffeine (25–50 mg per cup) — avoid late in the day if caffeine-sensitive. Green tea may reduce iron absorption from meals.
