About this remedy
Hibiscus tea is one of the most evidence-backed herbal remedies for blood pressure. A meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials found that hibiscus tea significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in adults with hypertension or pre-hypertension. Its anthocyanins act as ACE inhibitors and relax blood vessel walls, similar in mechanism to some pharmaceutical drugs — but with a gentler, whole-plant effect.
Preparation
Bring 2 cups of water to around 90°C (just below boiling). Add 2 tsp dried hibiscus calyces and steep for 7-10 minutes. Strain into a mug. Add a cinnamon stick and a squeeze of lemon to enhance flavor and add complementary cardiovascular support. Sweeten lightly with honey if needed.
Dosage
2 cups daily, ideally one in the morning and one in the evening. Effects on blood pressure are typically seen after 2-6 weeks of consistent daily use.
Cautions
May enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect of antihypertensive medications — monitor closely and consult your doctor before combining. Avoid during pregnancy as high doses may stimulate uterine contractions. May slightly lower blood sugar.
