About this remedy

Extra virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal, a phenolic compound that inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes — the same mechanism as ibuprofen. Research by Beauchamp et al. found that 50 mL (3.4 tablespoons) of EVOO provides anti-inflammatory activity equivalent to ~10% of an adult ibuprofen dose. Olive oil also provides vitamin E (antioxidant protection), oleic acid (anti-inflammatory monounsaturated fat), and hydroxytyrosol — one of the most potent natural antioxidants. The PREDIMED trial showed Mediterranean diets rich in EVOO significantly reduce inflammatory markers.

Preparation

Use 2–3 tablespoons of high-quality extra virgin olive oil daily — drizzle on salads, bread, cooked vegetables, or soups. For maximum oleocanthal, choose early-harvest, cold-pressed EVOO with a peppery throat finish (that 'bite' indicates oleocanthal content). Do not heat past smoke point.

Dosage

2–3 tablespoons (30–45 mL) extra virgin olive oil daily

Cautions

High in calories (120 cal per tablespoon) — account for in daily intake. Not all olive oils contain significant oleocanthal — choose quality EVOO. May have mild blood-thinning effects in very large doses.
