About this remedy
Peppermint oil is one of the best-studied herbal treatments for irritable bowel syndrome. A meta-analysis of 12 trials found it significantly reduces abdominal pain, bloating, and IBS symptom severity. Menthol relaxes smooth muscle in the GI tract via calcium channel blockade.
Preparation
Use enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules (0.2 mL per capsule) to ensure the oil reaches the intestines. Alternatively, brew strong peppermint tea with 2 teaspoons dried leaves steeped 10 minutes.
Dosage
1–2 enteric-coated capsules 3 times daily, 30 minutes before meals. Or 1–3 cups peppermint tea daily.
Cautions
Avoid with GERD as peppermint can relax the lower esophageal sphincter. Enteric-coated capsules reduce heartburn risk.
