About this remedy
Rhodiola is one of the best-studied adaptogens for fatigue. A 2000 double-blind trial of physicians on night duty found rhodiola significantly improved mental performance and reduced fatigue-related errors. Its compounds rosavin and salidroside help balance cortisol and support cellular energy production, making it ideal for demanding mental work, jet lag, or burnout recovery — without the crash of caffeine.
Preparation
Steep 1 tsp dried rhodiola root in hot water for 10-15 minutes, or take 200-400 mg standardized extract. Best on an empty stomach in the morning. Add a squeeze of lemon to soften the earthy taste.
Dosage
200-400 mg extract or 1 cup of tea in the morning. Use in cycles: 6-8 weeks on, 1-2 weeks off. Avoid afternoon/evening use as it can be stimulating.
Cautions
Can be over-stimulating for some — start with a low dose. Avoid in bipolar disorder (may trigger mania). May interact with antidepressants and stimulants. Not recommended during pregnancy.
