About this remedy
Scent reaches the brain's emotional centres faster than almost any other sense, which is why aromatherapy works best as a wind-down cue rather than a cure. Lavender is the better studied half of this pair - inhaled lavender has been examined in a number of controlled trials for anxiety - while rose adds a softer floral note and a long record of traditional use. Used nightly, the mist works partly through the scents and partly as a signal that the day is over.
Preparation
In a 100 ml spray bottle combine 60 ml rose water, 30 ml distilled water, and 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Add 1 teaspoon of vodka or witch hazel to help the oil disperse. Shake well before every use, since oil and water separate on standing.
Dosage
Two or three sprays over your pillow and bedding about 15 minutes before bed, or through the room whenever you want to slow down. Make a fresh bottle every 4 weeks.
Cautions
Aromatherapy is a comfort measure, not a treatment for anxiety, depression, or insomnia - speak to a clinician if any of those persist. Mist the bedding rather than your face, and keep it away from the eyes. Avoid essential-oil mists around infants and in cots, and around pets, cats especially. If you have asthma, try it first in a well-ventilated room, as strong scents can trigger symptoms. Patch test if it will touch skin, and never apply undiluted lavender oil directly.
