Valerian root is one of the most studied herbal sleep aids. It increases GABA availability in the brain, promoting relaxation and sleep onset. A meta-analysis of 16 studies found it may improve sleep quality without morning grogginess. Effects typically build over 2–4 weeks of regular use.

Preparation

Add 30 drops of valerian root tincture to a small glass of warm water, or steep 1 teaspoon dried valerian root in boiling water for 10–15 minutes.

Dosage

300–600 mg valerian extract or 30–60 drops tincture, 30 minutes before bed

Cautions

May cause vivid dreams. Do not combine with prescription sleep medications or alcohol. Allow 2–4 weeks for full effect.
