About this remedy
A 2019 meta-analysis of 14 randomised controlled trials in Critical Reviews in Food Science & Nutrition found ginger produced significant reductions in body weight and waist-to-hip ratio. Gingerols and shogaols mildly increase thermogenesis (the calories burned producing heat), reduce appetite, and improve post-meal blood sugar response. Paired with lemon — a simple source of vitamin C that aids iron absorption and hydration — it makes one of the most accessible evidence-based weight management drinks.
Preparation
Grate 1-2 inches of fresh ginger root into a mug. Pour 8-10 oz boiling water over and steep for 10 minutes. Strain, then add the juice of half a lemon and 1 teaspoon raw honey. Stir well.
Dosage
1-2 cups daily, one in the morning and one 30 minutes before a main meal. Use consistently for 8-12 weeks for cumulative effect.
Cautions
May interact with blood thinners — limit to 4g ginger daily if on warfarin or similar. Can worsen acid reflux in sensitive people. Avoid large amounts during pregnancy.
