About this remedy

Green tea is one of the most extensively studied beverages for weight management. A meta-analysis of 11 RCTs found green tea catechins combined with caffeine produce a statistically significant increase in energy expenditure and fat oxidation. The key compound EGCG works synergistically with caffeine to inhibit an enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline, allowing this fat-burning hormone to stay active longer. Effects are modest but real — roughly 100 extra calories burned per day in consistent users.

Preparation

Heat water to 80°C (just below boiling — boiling water destroys catechins). Steep 1 teaspoon loose-leaf green tea (or 1 tea bag) in 8 oz water for 2-3 minutes. Add a squeeze of lemon — vitamin C dramatically increases catechin bioavailability (by up to 13-fold).

Dosage

3 cups daily, ideally 30 minutes before meals or before exercise. Best consumed between meals rather than with food to avoid reduced iron absorption.

Cautions

Contains caffeine — avoid late in the day if sensitive. May reduce iron absorption; don't drink with meals if iron-deficient. Those on blood thinners should moderate intake. Avoid extracts above 800 mg/day (risk of liver toxicity).
